Baseball Sucks

After telling Gunny that I would need massive amounts of time to prepare and post this thread I sat down to put my thoughts together. Here's what I came up with:
I wanted to start with the strike from a few years back and how I couldn't relate to millionaires fighting over millions, but that's really not it. I wanted to mention that supposed superstars are padding their stats by using performance enhancing drugs and setting a bad example for our kids, but that's really not it either.
What it really comes down to is two little words: Texas Rangers. They suck. A lot. Or those two words could be Tom Hicks. A jackass of an owner who publicly admits that it is only a business to him and as long as he is making money; who cares?
But in reality the two little word's are: I'm spoiled.
In the mid 80's I watched and rooted for a VERY bad Cowboy team. In the early 90's I watched and rooted for a VERY VERY bad Mavericks team. So why won't I extend the same courtesy to the Rangers? I had time back then. I didn't have deadlines or quotas at work, I didn't have 3 kids and a wife vying for my time. Add this to the above mentioned reasons and that gives you the title of this thread: BASEBALL SUCKS.

I liked your original reasons much more than the end reason, but I can't stand that sports is viewed by a lot of owners as simply a business.

I've always wondered, its easy to hate millionaires (especially those that bitch about millions or try to ruin a pasttime making it a business) but if you are one do you hate the rest of us peeons?

Thanks for the follow up Nick. I think we may have some similarities vis-a-vis ownership for the clubs that we follow.

You follow Texas and I follow the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now the Pirates it seems operate in a similar fashion to your Rangers. The Succos are owned by the Nutting family, heretofore referred to as the Nuthouses, and they operate the Pirates to make a profit. With that as the objective it is imperative that the Nuthouses maintain payroll for the club at low level thereby ensuring maximum payback in MLBs form of revenue sharing.

Now should that mean that the Suckaneers will never compete for a playoff spot? I think not. When I look at the success that some other smaller payroll teams have had, i.e. Oakland A's and Minnesota Twins, I think it is possible for smaller market teams to be competitive. It requires an organization that is committed to winning at levels from the Major League team all the way through to the lowest level scouting and developmental squads. So far the Pirates have shown nothing but ineptitude at most of those levels.

I still like and follow the Pirates but until the Nuthouses leave the team will never compete for any baseball glory.

They all add up to give me the end result. I don't mean that I'm spoiled by the sucess of the Cowboys and Mavericks. I'm spoiled by Cuban and Jones. The Rangers have never been close and with Hicks and the strike, Bonds, etc; I'm just sick of it. I tried to get over it. I really did. I wanted to start a tradition of taking my son to Opening Day every year, I just can't get past the greed. And I do realize that greed touches everything, but it seems to pour in buckets out of Hicks and MLB.

Unfortunaltely greed = sports and sports = greed. I hate it hate it hate it.

I actually am a big fan of the city of Dallas with my major exception of course being the Cowgirls, but thats really forth worth right?

I guess the greed don't bother me as much as it does others. Greed is fine as long as, in sports anyways, it is followed up with a commitment to win.

Things I do hate about baseball right now;
1. Interleague play, this is stupid and needs to be stopped
2. The All-Star Game, what used to really be a true midsummer classic is now just a big MLB lovefest and the game usually blows.
3. The Designated hitter, dumbest rule ever created
4. The National Media that covers baseball, especially ESPN(BA), if it ain't Red Sox and Yankees then it ain't worth covering from what I see.

1. Right on! It is a stupid and unbalanced schedule.
2. The only thing I love Pete Rose for is the fact that he took this game seriously(ask Ray Fosse).
3. Right on again!
4. The baseball media is very northeast-centric and it must be getting old to the rest of the country.

I agree gunny that greed bothers me when the teams are not commited to winning or when players strike or othewise bitch or holdout for more money some of which end up being I want 6.5 mil a year but they only want to pay me 6.3...really, shut the F up.

I don't mind interleauge play personally.

The allstar game is a joke but I like the home run derby.

The DH either needs to be for both or no one to me.

Agreed the media coverage of baseball leaves a ton to be desired.
