Potential New Rival for NFL?
Just found this and it sounds like their may be some potential new competition for the NFL in the form of a new league.
I do agree with the statement that the salary cap should make it easier for the new league to sign players just under the top notch, since a number of those player sin theory may be "under" paid according to market value. I guess we shall see where this all leads. |

Good question ssigs. I think if this league does pursue guys who would've been 2nd round or lower draft picks and guys who may be on the fringe of their current NFL team then I say that a great many of them would jump ship. They may get the opportunity to make more money and play on the first team rather just being a bench warmer or some special teams guy only.

I clearly remember 3 rival leagues to the NFL.
The WFL in the 70s. They tried to sign top level talent and did in some cases like Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick. However, the financial backing was not there and the league folded and no one cared. The USFL in the 80s. Went after top level guys coming out of college like Jim Kelly, Steve Young and Reggie White. Eventually they won an anti-trust lawsuit for somethin like $3. The XFL run by the fella who runs the pro wrestling. From what I read this league actually made money but there was a bust up with NBC that led to its demise. |

the usfl was the closest to actually competing...i read that they wanted to move games to the fall to directly compete...i think a successful league is better off in the spring when less sports are on...like now..it would give people something to watch
xfl had the right idea...it just wasn't a good league...it never had time to build and gain an audience |

Wel right now there is spring football vis-a-vis NFL Europe, not that the American football fan gives two hoots about it. A new league in the US would I think have a better shot at competing against baseball and the NHL/NBA playoffs. So get the league established in the spring and then when it is strong enough move it to the fall if the goal is eventually to get the teams merged into the NFL.

I think there is potential given the huge demand for football in the US and Canada. They'd have to do it right and really strive to not have it treated like curiosity/spectacle. Basically, do it the opposite way that the XFL was done. I really beleive there is more than enough talent to sustain another league, but I shudder at what it might do the the CFL talent pool (not that anyone but us canucks care about that). if they do get it going, I agree that spring would be the best time to start. Wonder if they would try to set it up like a minor league for the NFL or would really try to compete with them in the long run (good luck on that one).

Hey klicks, not being all that football knowledgeable I gotta a question.
In your estimation how many players in the CFL are from the US? I just thought of that based on your comment about the potential loss of talent to the CFL. |

Probably about 75%, but I'll verify and post again. We load up on so many americans that the league has non-import minimums/import maximums. CFL has 'trained' quite a few QB's before they headed back down south - Flutie, Moon, (Mr. Ankle) Theisman, "Hey, I'm straight" Garcia are the ones that come immediately to mind. And we let them smoke pot so we get Ricky!

for accuracy purposes, the CFL doesn't really let them smoke pot. They just don't do any drug testing yet.

I stand corrected Gunner - my 75% guesstimate was high. Out of 36 non-QB players only 17 can be imports. Never heard of an import being anything but american. Also, I've never heard of a team that didn't use its full quota of allowed imports. Currently we have 9 teams - so figure about 180 americans playing in the CFL (3 QBs plus 17 other positions per team).

Cuban is a smart guy, but then so is Vince McMahon. IT will be hard for him to get real network help with this. The NFL has those guys zipped up. He may have to start a league and a network.

I'd like to see that. Each team has a designated farm team that they can call people up from like in the MLB and NHL. Probably won't happen though. |
