Kevin Ferguson in MMA
This Saturday night brings another one of the underground street fighting legends into the legitimate fighting world. Kevin Ferguson "aka" Kimbo Slice has his first legally sacntioned fight. He will oppose 46 year old ex-heavyweight boxing champ Ray Mercer.
Slice is most famous for his losing street bout with Boston cop Sean "the Cannon' Gannon who has had two MMA bouts going 1-1 but losing very badly in his last one. Gannon beat Ferguson by using some MMA moves and chokes that were supposedly against the agreed upon rules(rules? In a street fight?). Whats the verdict from you MMA fans. Will Ferguson beat Mercer and if he does, does it signal a future for him. On another note Ferguson has an open challenge for anyone willing to bet $10,000. |

I have NO idea who is going to win this fight. But i am very interested in seeing the result... its a PPV card, but hope I can find it on Youtube sunday. Slice only fights stand up street fights... no kicking, no take downs, etc. What we don't know is if either he or Mercer have any clue how to work on the ground... if its a straight boxing match you would have to give the experience edge to Mercer.
Mercer has a boxing record of 34-6, while Slice beat like 5 guys in street fights... and if you watched the fights, you know they were bums. But Slices' chin seems to be like a cinderblock. But how is Mercers 47 year old chin against little MMA gloves? No one knows. This is one of the wierdest most "WHO KNOWS" types of fights in a LONG time. |

Oh and here is the link to the card if anyone cares...
Cage Fury Fighting Championships - Atlantic City, NJ Also on the card is the infamous Noah Inhofer... known for leaving the ultimate fighter show after winning cuz he missed his girlfriend of 6 months. Couldn't go a few weeks without seeing her... blowing his UFC chance forever. Gregor Gracie of the famous Gracie family, and Nick Serra the younger brother to the UFC welterweight champ Matt Serra. |

Kimbo has been training in Las vegas with Bas Ruten with the focus being on the ground game. That was how he lost to Gannon. He pummeled Gannon with strikes but was all done once the mat was brought into the equation. You can see that fight on youtube.

Oh yeah, i've seen the Gannon fight a few times now... i've been a big fan of Kimbos street fights for a while. Its good for him that he's been focusing on his ground game... now the question is, is Mercer doing the same?

I doubt it. Mercer was at Ft. Carson in Colorado back in 86-87 as I was. He was fighting for the Army at the time and training for the Olympic team. He only worked as hard as he had to, unlike Andrew Maynard who was an Army middleweight at the time. Mercer is naturally strong and has a decent chin. If he had worked harder as a pro he would have had a longer career. I would be shoked if he is still anything other than a very good standup striker.

I was afraid of that... i've always read that Mercer was a lazy lazy man when it came to his training (sort of like James Toney)... all the natural gifts in the world turned into a mediocre career. Just based on that knowledge, i'd say that Kimbo is going to win. Seems to make sense that the guy who is working his ass off wins the fight.

Anyone see it? I hear there is a video on youtube, but i forgot to look for it yesterday. I had a really busy weekend and it skipped my mind. I won't give the result here if someone has yet to see it.
Search youtube for it and you can watch it that way. |

His presumed next opponent should prove interesting.

Is it Tank Abbott? If so, he STINKS! He's 1-7 in his last 8 fights and is 42 years old. He has one win in 9 years, and 5 of those losses came within 3 minutes... Kimbo should have no trouble taking him out quickly.

There is thread on Sherdog where they are talking about what would happen in a Ferguson-Lesnar match.
