The Jester’s Quart: Is Chris Benoit Really Sports News?

You may read the headline on this column and then double-check what site you’re reading it on. At first, it may seem hypocritical to torch the media for covering a pro wrestling tragedy on its sports pages, and then write about that issue in my own sports column. But it’s not the first time...

You make some valid points here, the primary one being that the WWE is not a sports organization. They ceased being that decades ago and crossed the line into the comedy/drama world of theatre in the 1980's.

This does belong on the sports page however, strictly because of the steroid angle.

And it's only natural. It is based on a sport and athletes do participate in it.
A gray area I guess.

Well techincally if you want to make the connection...

Sports is in the end, entertainment and the WWE is entertaining to some.

Yeah its really one of those topics where one person can make a good arguement against it being on the sports pages... and then turn around and make a good arguement why it should be.

Personally, I like it being in sports news because it does involve steroids and kind of relates to what is going on in other sports. Plus, Benoit was an athlete... his results may have been scripted, but he was taking those falls, doing those flips, jumping head first off the top ropes, etc.

Did you all read the news that someone had changed/edited Benoit's wikipedia page 14 hours before the police found the bodies at his house.

Someone has actually admitted to it and wikipedia has not closed his page for editing until July 8th

Aricle > http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlates...746068,00.html

wikipedia page > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Benoit

rather interesting if you ask me!

Hey, I have no problem if sports editors deem professional wrestling to be newsworthy and give it real estate in the sports section. But as a reader, I expect some consistancy -- don't give me Chris Benoit one month and then not report the "results" of Wrestlemania and SummerSlam. If it's a sport, then it's a sport.
