Oilers Sign Vanek to Offer Sheet!

Sources tell TSN that the team has signed forward Thomas Vanek (http://tsn.ca/nhl/player_bio.asp?player_id=3504) to a seven-year, $50 million offer sheet, a signing that carries a price tag of four first round picks as compensation to the Buffalo Sabres if the team chooses not to retain him.

Holy hell at this point with the losses maybe they take the picks...they seem to have a nack for making players out of young guys and no names and making it work.

Just curious but what would happen after 7 days if they didn't match or accept the picks?

Well that was quick... the Sabres matched the Oilers offer and will keep Vanek. Good move.

This should be a lesson to NHL teams... re-sign your RFAs that you want to keep BEFORE free agency starts.

If they don't match, they automatically get the picks, and Vanek would have gone to the Oilers.

lol, and i guess they are pissed that the Oilers did this. They drove Vaneks price up big time. $7.15 mil a year for a player who has only been in the league for 2 years.

You have to imagine they could have gotten him MUCH cheaper. All other good RFAs who re-signed got raises, but not from $900k to $7mil. Thats insanity.

Wow I didn't realize his salary was that low last year. Buffalo blew that and maybe a few years ahead fo sure.
