Edmonton Oilers tender offer sheet to Ducks winger Dustin Penner - NHL - Yahoo! Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=cp-nhl_oilers_penner&prov=cp&type=lgns)

All I have to say is......I was wondering when we would start seeing GMs use the salary cap to cause problems for other teams by...

Why would Lowe want to strap down a team in a different conference(Buffalo)?

The Ducks would be stupid to match. Niedermyer is still on the cuff, and Selanne is still an RFA (I think). This would put them $2+ Million over the cap. For a second year guy, that is just bad business.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Ducks GM Burke calls Edmonton offer to Penner 'gutless' - NHL - Yahoo! Sports

Thats why you gotta like Burke. He isnt afraid to call it like he sees it. While it is a legitamate signing strategy, it is kinda ridiculous to see the offer sheets Lowe has been throwing out there. Vanek is a hell of a young talent, but he sure as hell isnt worth 7 mil a year (at least NOT YET). And a pay increase on a 2nd year power forward from 450K to 4.25 million for a 45 point season is absurd.......now RYAN GETZLAF is worth 4.25 million (Getzlaf led all duck forwards in TOI/game in the playoffs for a reason), and I think we can all agree that Penner IS NOT Ryan Getzlaf. Lowe isnt even trying to ACT like he is doing anything other then screwing other teams over financially. Quite frankly, if I were an Oiler's fan Id be a little surprised at his willingness to grossly overpay players.

As for the question about why he would do it to buffalo.....why not? Any way you get at it, every team is his opponent. Maybe not in the regular season, but there is always chance that any team in the east could be the final obstacle between the Oilers and a cup. Who would have thought that the Ducks would end up playing OTTAWA for the cup last offseason?
