nfl officiating terrible in week 1
I really do not bitch about officiating but after watching a few games this weekend, the NFL officials really made some crappy calls in the Chargers/Bears, Bengals/Ravens, and a couple of others
I am sure that the NFL will be sending out a few apologies on the bad calls made, If I remember right they do that |

There are always bad calls in every sport every week. Personally, i was glued to the tv sunday and really didn't think they were any worse than normal. Care to name any exact calls Meik?

I also didn't think they were horrible or really any worse than normal. I know in the Eagles Packers game there were calls that should have been called (against the Eagles) that were not and a weak call against the Packers with offensive pass interference.
I know that last night the Balt vs. Cinci game should have been tied...Heap clearly did not commit offensive pass interference but he was actually held (the jersey grab is a newer rule that is holding regardless) which was called in the exact same respect in the Cards vs. Niners game. |

I think that endzone call against the Ravens at the end of the game was beyond horrible.

Worst part about it was that it was a game changing call...if anything in that situation there should be no call on either side (even though it was a horrid wrong call). Who knows what the eventual outcome would have been but it should have been tied and then played on into a likely OT event.

agree with you on that call Bill - how they ever got OFFENSIVE pass interference out of that I'll never know. Funny thing is, before last night's game (a barn burner of a game!) I was thinking they seemed to finally get the pass intereference right and was impressed that I had not seen any BS pass intereference called when there was little if any contact - but then last night's games happenned. There was a brutal defensive pass interference called in the second game - when they showed the replay I kept waiting to see it - there was literally nothing. All in all though when you consider the whole week, I thought the reffing was much better than last year (except for the 2 calls mentioned above).

good point Beers - that crappy offensive pass interference call negated a tying (assuming they'd get the convert of course) touchdown, and then that holding call on the Bengals gave the Ravens 4 shots more to score. That holding call happenned right after the interference - looked like an even 'em up call to me - especially since the same backfield judge called both. But - even though the Ravens got ripped off on the first call, they still beat themselves by blowing 1st and goal after that (the Bolger curse - close but no cigar).

Sure they had an opportunity to score after the horrible call and didn't...but it should have never came down to that (assuming mr accurate converts the EP) the game is tied and that series never happens. The call on the Bengals after the original call was actually a descent call and according to the rules of the game was the right call but again...it should have never come down to that. I know refs make mistakes but that was blatantly just a hose job...perfect view of the entire play and he calls the wrong guy and team for a no call. Sucks for the Ravens...regardless of what may have happened in OT.

well yeah you're right Beers - all I was saying was that despite getting ripped off on a legit TD, they still had a chance (an excellent chance) to tie it up and didn't. I fully agree that the offensive interference call was brutal (if anything maybe defensive pass interference, but really there should have been no call at all) - so brutal that the ref's impartiality comes into question.

Oh you're right they had all the opportunity they needed to score after the fact but you're right...thats a play that you wonder about the coaches mentality. I hate seeing games decided by such shit.

anyone see in the paper today that the giants are complaining about a non-call for illegal formation on the Hurd touchdown? Funny that the coaches chaulk that play up as their reason for losing, not their complete inability to even stall a drive or cover the middle.

Tom Coughlin annoyed over non-call on Romo-Hurd TD
BY RALPH VACCHIANO DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Tuesday, September 11th 2007, 4:00 AM According to Tom Coughlin, the 51-yard touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Sam Hurd that sealed the game for the Cowboys in the fourth quarter Sunday never should have happened. Apparently, receiver Patrick Crayton went in motion and then took a step forward, but a penalty flag wasn't thrown. "They've got an illegal procedure which is very obvious but is not called," Coughlin said yesterday. "It would've been interesting. It would've been third-and-12. What happens there? You're going to have to punt the ball if you don't convert. And then what happens |

Its just sour grapes from a coach who lost a game, lost his RB and QB and other players, and knew his job was in jeopardy before the season started. Sure, maybe he did move early, but my god man, there are missed calls all the time in the NFL. Are you going to come out and bitch when your team gets away with one?

not only that, it's not like it was a hold that sprung a back for a huge gain, or an offensive pass interference call that wasn't made, it was an illegal procedure call away from the play if it even did occur.
