Dallas Stars 2007 Discussion
While I am not into hockey that much, I wanted to get some feedback from you true hockey fans and get your thoughts on the Dallas Stars, since the season has already started
Is Mike Modano too old? They don't seem to be starting off that well but I would welcome any feedback! Full Article |

They are tough to figure out. I picked them to make the playoffs, but a lot of "experts" i'm seeing are saying they are going to have a down year. They may not have done enough in the offseason to make them much better than they were last season. But they have Turco in net, and he could keep them in a lot of games, as long as their defense doesn't give up on him.

Yep,Turco will get them to the playoffs where it's one and done.....typical year.

I partially concur with Jay and Rusty - Turco MIGHT be enough to have them squeak into a playoff spot but I don't think they will. Even if they do squeak in I can't see them getting out of round 1 because they don't have much outside of goaltending. And Mike - yes, Modano is getting too old, at least to be an offensive leader. Besides Turco, they're strengths are Zubov, Hagman, Lehtinen and maybe Morrow. Not striking too much fear into anyone with that lineup. To be fair, they play sound defensive hockey, and play to win 2-1 type hockey games. Their overall team discipline is their biggest strength, combined with Turco's netminding prowess. I got them pegged for 10th in the west for what it's worth. Depends if the Oilers and LA play above expectations or not.

Morrow maybe a strength?? I'd say, if healthy, that he is more of a threat than Mo and that's not a knock on Mo. Morrow is clearly the future of the team. Remember, Turco had 3 playoff shutouts last year. If the offense heats up, this team could go far.

I know that Modano has been with this team for along time, shoot since they moved here or before (correct me if I am wrong) but I would think that the Stars would think it maybe time to go in a younger direction > kinda like the SF Giants are

Morrow the future of the team? I feel very bad for all Dallas fans if thats the case. The guys career high in goals is 25. Not to mention he's not much of a passer and is always giving the other teams a powerplay. He's not a bad player, but he's a 2nd liner at best.

I think you have hit the proverbial nail on the head there Jay - Dallas really doesn't have anyone who's better than a second liner now. From what I have seen, they have not done anything to replace Modano's offence which is now waning. With all due respect to Modano - he just can't produce like he use to, and I'm not suggesting he doesn't belong on the team becuase he does, but they have done nothing to to deal with the fact that he is on the downhill side of this career. Team defence is good and goaltending is excellent, but they basically cannot score goals; and they'll need to against the better teams. But I'm just repeating myself.

Thought I'd give this a bump.
I had the Stars pegged for 10th in the west when we responded to Mike's post - they currently sit 5th but the points are close and they could climb or drop pretty quickly- I'm betting on drop. I sure didn't foresee the season Ribeiro is having, but am going to pat myself on the back for projecting decent seasons for Zubov and Hagman. Nick sure called Morrow right (I'll give myself a half-score for my call on him) - we were all right about Modano slowing down, but that was too obvious. My call on Lehtinen was pretty good I think, except for the injury - but he's just shy of a point a game. Surprising thing, to me anyway, is that Turco is not playing great by his standards - but the team was doing well anyway, at least until recently. They have been sliding for the past while.

I say this this year as I do every year. One and done in the playoffs.

and you'll be right again this year Rusty, assuming they hold on to make the playoffs.

This team bores the shit out of me...i can't seem to stomach even one game of theirs. Same old same old for this team ok throughout make the playoffs and go nowhere...as others have alluded to already.
