The (sports) Gospel According to Mark: Athletes' endorsements get no votes

Curt Schilling earned my respect during the World Series. He played gutsy and literally left everything he had on the field. He played injured out of his dedication to his teammates and fans and, in the process, became one of the greatest postseason stories in sports history. Red Sox fans will...

What a coincidence. Some people need to realize that they aren't sports analysts.

Schilling should not have opened his mouth man, I agree with you 100% on this one Mark.

I mean talk about using your position to try and gain votes for someone that no one likes
( i say this now and he is actually winning the election) //no names intended

Indeed, Mike! That should be a life-affirming mantra: "athletes aren't allowed to have political opinions, because they aren't political analysts!"

Brilliant. It'll certainly clean up a lot of things. Also, for now on, you aren't allowed to have an opinion on movies unless YOU are a filmmaker. And you're not allowed to voice your appreciation (or unappreciation) of music unless you are a musician. And yes, sports. You can't comment on sports unless you're an athlete.

Indeed, the world of public figures truly does not belong to us, that's why we're not allowed to have opinions of them. So for now on, unless you're an expert in that profession, shut your damn pie hole.

Athletes can have views and opinions on politics, they should. I would be concerned if they didn't have opinions. An election is a big deal, but athletes shouldn't be abusing the platform fans give them to promote their own candidate. What is the goal for an athlete to campaign with a candidate? Isn't it to sway people to vote for his candidate?

Voters need to look at the issues and think for themselves.

So lets just throw out our freedom of speech then. Any person, no matter who they are, or what they do, can use any platform at any time that they have access to, to promote or denote any topics... as long as it is lawful. It doesn't matter if they are athletes, musicians or Michael Moore.

ishkur,

you are a moron, plain and simple. You read things, and apperently you dont actually understand what you read. The simple fact is that sports players are allowed to have their own opinions, that was not the issue. The fact is that they dont know more than you or i about a particular candidate, so when they attempt to get people to vote, it isnt on political merit, it is on the fact that this player is a popular guy. It has nothing to do with analysts or any such thing. It is just as bad as actors or musicians trying to pretend like they know more than the general public, it is nonsense

Oh come on... the athletes are no different than those baffoons the canadates have calling your house every 15 minutes! Most of them don't know what the fuck they are talking about... u ever try asking them questions about the politics about the canidate they represent? Its rather funny. The sooner you realize the general public is stupid when it comes to politics the better off you will be. And we saw how stupid they are by who is in office again after being terrible the first go round.

That doesnt even speak to the point. The fact is that it is an abuse of a position. You play a god damned game for a living. You get paid millions of dollars for that little service. You get hundreds of thousands of fans, and then you think that they arent unfairly influencing a political situation.

They dont know more than you do, probably less. Its crap.

They are different, they are well-known names and huge celebrities. If they want to support their candidate for President, fine, there are many ways they can work behind the scenes. But they should not be abusing the platform given to them by fans to push their own agenda. They are abusing their status as role-models. If this continues, how long will it be before candidates pay athletes to endorse them??
