Bruins Alumni :vs: Marblehead Pond Hockey

Spent yesterday afternoon at the O'Keefe Center, home ice to the Salem State College Vikings. The Bruins Alumni Hockey Team was there to play a group of adult players from neighboring Marblehead. The alumni team plays 3 or four games there every year to support one cause or another. This game was for the Marblehead Youth Hockey program.

What impresses me most about these games is just how good these NHL guys are. There are some who were top-notch players like Rick Middleton, Gary Doak and Ken Hodge but there are also second and third tier guys who only spent a few years in the league. The local players are always good ex- high school or Div. III players plus some current high school kids. Some are coaches. They are really good skaters and players themselves......but when it comes down to it on the ice there is no comparison. The NHL guys do what they want when they want. If they want to score, they do. If they don't want to score they put the puck right on the goalies pads.

They played two games of thirty minutes. The Bruins against first the Marblehead Red Team and then next against the Black Team. The Red Team went down 6-1. The Black Team did a little better, the alumni was getting tired, but never really had a chance with the final score 7-4.

My pal Lamby played for the Alumni, even though he was never a Bruins player. They were shorthanded. He was hilarious, maybe the worst stick-handler on the ice, but at 265 pounds he basically skated where he wanted to. There is no real hitting in these games but Dick bumped a few guys here and there with dramatic effect. At the end of both games he planted himself in front of the net in an effort to score but couldn't quite find the net. The Marblehead guys tried to move him out but couldn't.

Rick Middleton can still skate and handle the puck, Gary Doak still looks good also. Cleon Daskalakis was the goalie, Don and Bob Sweeny were there as were John Carter(4 goals), Bob Beers, Andy Brickley, Simonetti, Featherstone and a few others.

Dick brought me into the locker room between games to get my Bob Beers stick signed. Beers confirmed it was a game used stick from 1997(something about it being all one piece). He signed it and then everyone else did also.

After the game I went to Sidelines(a Salem sports bar) for a beer and so did just about all of the players. Hockey players are great to hang out and speak with. They are so much more the regular guy than most pro athletes.

I entered a raffle and won an Easton hockey bag and a Bauer XL Hoodie.

All in all a great little Sunday Afternoon.

We will save that for our by fundraising event in November. The retail value is $350 - $500, a pretty broad range.

The stick I think will bring $150-$250.
