Seasonal licence... probably runs out before the Super Bowl.

My guess, Bil knew it wasn't totally legal, but they let him go in the past.

I'm pretty sure thats our Bil in the article.

wait wait wait wait....bil owns the shanty?? isn't he the mayor as well??? and police chief??? how can they mess with mr. salem himself???? as usual the cops seem like pricks...

Yes, the Salem News intrepid reporter ID's me as the owner of the Shanty. No I do not own it, but over the years people have assumed that I had a financial interest in it and the Salem News has now insured that people will continue to think so. Do I or don't I? Depends on who you ask.

We have a seasonal license that expires on 15 JAN. When the Patriots played the Rams in the Super Bowl we asked for and were given permission "unofficially" to have the party. Every year since then we have had one. Technically we should have pulled a one day license, but since we did not charge a cover and the beer is free the considered opion of the official who told us to go ahead was we were OK.

We were OK for six years, until this the seventh year. Some other business owner called the mayor's office and complained that we were stealing customers from "legitimate" businesses. It is all of bunch of hooey. They had to shut us down for appearances sake.

We went before the licensing board and everything is copestetic, no fines, no suspensions, no problems. The Salem News had their fun with it. All the idiot who called did was provide us with some good off-season publicity.

We are calling it the Great Shanty Raid of 08.

The cop was Sgt. (name deleted to protect the innocent) a cute little blonde with a rep as a hard ass. She was actually pleasant and polite. Everyone was actually very nice about this except for the (insert preferred series of expletives here) who made the call.

Funny story about her. This past August we had a kid come by and try to bum some money off of some cutomers at an outside table. He was told to move on and pulled out a knife like he was a tough guy. Within moments he was faced with two angry waitresses, six pissed off customers and a cranky cook holding a softball bat. He took off like scalded dog but not before someone called the police on a cell phone. By the time the good Sgt. got there the kid was gone, but Frank who sort of fit the description of the "man with a knife" was leaving. He was the first person she saw so she drew the Glock, screamed for him to put his hands up, leaned him on a car and started to frisk him before anyone could correct the misunderstanding. Frank looked a little excited, we aren't sure if it was of from fright, or the excitement of having those hands rooting around his crotch.

We still bust Franks balls on that one.

Wow good reads indeed. No wonder bil gives out free beer (which are still sitting on the bar) to Ranters.

I really need to get loaded with Bil...I bet the stories only get better with alcohol.
