Hagler :vs: Mugabi 1986

I watched this on fight on ESPN Classics last night. For some reason I had forgotten what a great fight this was and just how great Marvin had been.

Mugabi brought everything he had and hit Hagler with really good shots throughout the fight. Hagler never backed up from a punch. Mugabi moved back a few times but always managed to answer the shots and the bell. In the 11th, when a Hagler flurry moved Mugabi back across the ring I think he went down from sheer exaustion as opposed to the direct effects of the punches.

They both threw lots of body shots and reports had each of them urinating blood for days afterwards.

Nice! Yep, both ended up in the hospital, pissing blood. Mugabi started his career with 26 straight KO's before losing to Hagler. I read a nice writeup afterwards saying they thing that is a big factor in why Mugabi lost. In his first 26 fights, he had only even been past 6 rounds one time. They questioned his stamina since he ended all his fights early.

After that fight, Mugabi was KO'd in the 1st round, 1st round, and 3rd round in three major title fights after the Hagler fight.

Although this is a hard thing to judge, I counted about a dozen kidney shots between both fighters and at least two liver shots by Hagler. If you remember the "Golder Boy" DeLoya woudn't get up after being on the receiving end of a liver shot a couple of years ago.

Where have all the fighters gone?

Oscar DeLa Hoya was KO'd from a crushing Bernard Hopkins liver shot. It was a perfect punch.

But there are stil alot of "fighters" out there... you just have to know where to look. This past weekend, Israel Vazquez and Raphael Marquez just finished their 3rd fight against each other. Its going to go down as one of the best all time trilogies in boxing history. These guys didn't stop throwing in any fight. One KO victory for each fighter in the first two fights and then a close SD win for Vazquez in the 3rd.

And coming up soon, Manny Pacquaio will fight Juan Manuel Marquez which promises to be all action like their 1st fight was. In the first fight, Pacquaio dropped Marquez 3 times in the first round... and Marquez battled all the way back to earn a draw.

Oh, Bil, I don't know if you have access to HBO at all... but if you are looking for fighters, tomorrow night on HBO at 9:30, they will have two great fights.

Sam Peter vs. Oleg Maskaev for the WBC Heavyweight title. 80% of all of Maskaev's fights end in KO's and 74% of Peters fights end in KO's. These two big boys are going to bang. And...

Juan Diaz vs. Nate Campbell fight for the IBF lightweight title. Two more guys who stand toe to toe and let their hands go. Not near as big (around 130 lbs) but they are all action fighters.

Me = excited!

Its a short term thing that pretty much cripples you. Its one of those things that the boxer is PISSED about afterwards because you feel fine afterwards. Its a delayed reaction thing too, you get hit... 3 seconds later you are in such pain that you can't stand up straight. About 30 seconds later it goes away, and you are ready to fight.

I know there are still real men out there in the fight game, just being rhetorical. I miss Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti.

I watch and read alot about boxing. Many boxers have talked about it.

I have the Ward/Gatti trilogy on VHS Bil. I am a huge fan of both of those guys, so naturally, thats my personal favorite trilogy of all time.
