The Jester’s Quart: Terrible Towel-Dropping

Full disclosure: It was not my intention to use this week’s column to address the unremitting controversy that is the Monday Night Football/Desperate Housewives/T.O./Nicolette Sheridan mess.

The whole thing set off my crap detector as being a prepackaged button-pusher invented to juice the...

Every week, millions of Americans are fascinated with watching two dozen sweaty, grunting, gasping muscular men with broad, manly shoulders huddled on a field together, wearing skintight clothing, assigned positions like "tight end" and "wide receiver", playing for teams with names like the "Packers" and the "Browns" (and, formerly, the "Oilers"), and the play can't start until they "hike" the "ball" between the legs and then try to get it "through the hole", and then they pat each other on the ass when it's over and go showering together after the game........but there's nothing sexual about it. Oh no, nothing at all.

Also, Brad Richards won the Conn Smythe, not St. Louis, but it doesn't matter because I think he's in Europe also.

Only if you're trying to make something out of nothing, there is.

Incidentally, if you're being sarcastic, you're slathering it on a little too thick.

The owens fiasco was not at all racial as Tony Dungy makes it out to be. I thought, myself, that it was funny as shit. To have ads on TV like that makes it even more interesting. But to go on and make it look like it is racial is just crazy imo.

America is the only country (dont quote me on that) which does not allow nudity on television commercials or regular prime time schedules. European Nations, I cannot speak for the rest of the world, allows for nudity to show as a normal thing. Look and they are okay with it, why cant we!

I think you're pretty much right. We're one of the only countries in the world that has such strict restricitons on nudity on TV. They allow it in Europe, in Australia, and probably almost anywhere else you could name. It's just because we're such a sexually repressed society - at least that's what the people in charge of things want to make us. They want to hide all this sex stuff away and confine it to HBO, Cinemax, and movies with an NC-17 rating. I can understand why there are these restrictions in some cases, but in other cases it doesn't make sense any more.

All in all, we're a whacked out country.
