Red Sox fans overall are the most annoying fan base in American pro sports. They think because they "suffered" for so many years that they have carte blanche to be huge fucking assholes at every opportunity and once the team started being good they had this air of superiority that is just insufferable. That attitude then bled over to the Pats (a team which was largely ignored by Boston until they started playing well) and the Celtics (same situation as the Pats.)
I know that it is really just the minority of fans that are like this but still, this type of stuff is ridiculous. There is a reason why most of America hates Boston sports teams these days and it is not because they are good, it’s because of some of their fans. ESPN’s transformation into NESN doesn’t really help matters much either but that’s a story for another day. |

Your understanding of the Boston press is lacking. Even when the Patriots and Celtics weren't winning they had a full-time beat writer covering and traveling with them. Every game got front page coverage in the sports section and they competed with the other teams for the top of the mast. Try referencing Will McDonough who built a national career from Patriotse and francisco Rosa who did the same covering the Bruins. It should also be noted here that both Bob Ryan and Jackie MacMullan began covering the celtics exclusively.
The "long suffering" bullshit perpetuated by the press for the Red Sox, patriots and Bruins is true but the real reason people hate Boston fans is because of the winning over the last 4 to 6 years. The ESPN and NESN situation is true but all I have to say about that is check out the TV ratings share for the Red Sox/Yankees games on Saturday and Sunday and then tell me ESPN is wrong. |

Well NY is the biggest city in the US and the Sawx are thier biggest rival so of course the ratings will be good. But I would be willing to bet that while the northeast will be rivited the rest of the country won't give a shit.
As far as the Pats and Celts having beat writers even when they were bad that doesn't mean a whole lot. A major metropolitan newspaper should have a beat writer for each of the local sports teams. Here in St. Louis we have a beat writer for the Blues even though they are beyond terrible. I wasn't really talking about the papers anyways, I was talking about the fans. There was a time when you could not give away Pats tickets in that town and despite being the most storied franchise in the NBA the Celtics weren't exactly selling out a ton of games either. |

The Patriots had a three year period where they had trouble selling tickets and that was when Robert Orthwein was making plans to move the team to St. Louis. Once Parcells came in that stopped that and kind of screwed up Orthweins plans. However the fact is that Boston fans will not support losers. To me that is a plus. If you as a fan support a losing team it will in all likehood remain a losing team. It took Bruins fans twenty years to figure that out and I'm not sure they haven't thrown their support to the Bruins prematurely. The Celtics of the Russell era did not draw for reason well known i.e. a blackmans game in a white mans city. That ended in the eighties. They didn't draw in the 90's because they sucked and didn't deserve fan support. Fan does not mean sucker. |
