I do not think that military service should be a prerequisite for high political service.

It is my opinion however, that to many young people over the last 30 years have not met their responsibility as Americans by performing some kind of national service. I know that the option for this are limited almost exclusively to the military but I don't care. We are a nation of the fat, lazy and ungrateful. It always bothers me when I meet a young and bright person who doesn't give a moments consideration to serving.

Go get em John, I would like to hear why Mr. Obama never served.

McCain is running a very negative campaign. I really want to give this guy a chance to show me somthing and so far he is really turning me off. So far all I see is a grouchy old wind bag.

There is a difference Bil. A big one, between the candidates behavior. Hilary and McCain are doing most of the attacking,Obama the counter attacking.

Quite possibly the most ignorant post i've read on here in years. Well done.

Of course, just my opinion of your opinion.

Apologies nothing. As far as I know some or all of you contribute in other ways.

I would like to see national service implemented with some sort of education benefits tied in. It does not have to be military.

I stand by my post.

never going to happen...that choice is what separates us from other countries...besides they offer education benefits to join the military right now and alot of people take that option

People need to be inspired to donate thier time and effort into some kind of national service. I'm sure if there was a leader that could inspire that kind of change, you would see it.

You have a point there. Our country was at a real low point when after Nixon,Ford, and Carter. Our economy sucked,Communist takeovers were the norm and the US and US backed regimes were getting run over around the world.Reagan came in,got the hostages out of Iran and really brought the country together and inspired patriotism.
Now we are in that same boat again.

This country (thanks largely to the "leaders") has lost a sense of itself and thus the American citizens have followed suit. Its a me first attitude unfortunately for most. Its a freaking shame it took a tragedy like 9/11 to have Americans, albeit for a short time, to be proud and stand up with a sense of patriotism and country first type of attitude.

What’s interesting is that despite being a patriot and a true American hero, I just don’t feel any kind of hope or inspiration from McCain but I do from Obama.
