NHL dismisses new Russian league threat (AP)

Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin has no intention of returning home to play in Russia, and the threat of a newly revamped Russian professional league using lucrative offers to poach talent is being dismissed by NHL officials. "At this point, it's not a major concern," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said at the conclusion of the league's draft in Ottawa on Saturday.

They dismissed the WHA back in the 70's until Bobby Hull signed.

Exactly! $15mil TAX FREE for Malkin, and they aren't concerned?? Sure, maybe Malkin won't take it... he really wanted out of Russia before. Shit, he hopped a plane without them knowing so he could get over here. But there may be others who wouldn't mind going back there so much.

To me I would think the NHL almost has to say this, rather than saying nothing or actually admitting the truth that this could be a big issue going forward .
