Braves announcer Skip Caray dies.

http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2008/08/03/skip_caray_dies.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab

I listened to him for so many years. Will be very strange watching a Braves game without him. RIP

Sad indeed, the whole fam is pretty well known in the announcing world.

Sports announcers are subtle icons. You don't think to much about them overall, but they are there all the time. I miss Ken Coleman, Ned Martin, Jim Woods and Curt Gowdy. I was never a big Johnny Most guy, he was to much of a homer but he was very entertaining. I always think of Keith Jackson when a college running back drops the ball. Over the years Monday Night Football went through a lot of announcers but to me it will always be Cosell, Gifford & Meredith. Jim McKay and the "agony of defeat" is part of TV sports legend. Chick Hearn out in LA was unforgettable. These days I just see boring suits and ex-players. In Boston we are stuck with Jerry Remy who most fans adore because............because.......he...........is.. .........such a good...........fuck that he sucks.

First; I remember him as a ballplayer. I was very young but he was there and demanding attention. The press loved him. he paved the way in Boston media for Derek Sanderson.

Second; He was the Red Sox announcer in the 70's with Dick Stockton. He was good, knowledgeable and not a complete homer all though he did have his favorites. I remember folks saying he was general manager material. he later went to Chicago and called the Pale Hose games. Chicago thought he would be a good GM so they hired him. That didn't work out so well.
