The goal of the NBA marketing program is to expand overseas and be the first truly global professional sports league. A superstar signing with a european team would be a must for that to truly happen.

I just can't see how that would work. Imagine the travel times for the Lakers to play a new Italian team. You'd have to extend the season, or cut the amount of games played. Think how long the playoffs would take.

They would probably have teams play mostly within their own divisions with each team making one overseas trip a year during the regular season. Playoffs would be similiar with a format like the world baseball championships for the final four or eight teams. All of the leagues in this country are exploring it. Baseball pioneered it in the 30's with trips to Japan(where Moe Berg actually operated as a spy). The NHL laid groundwork in the 70's with the original Summit Series in 1972. They are all have an interest in how the World Baseball thing is going. Truly international is what they all want.
