College Sports This forum is about some weird social strata involving brow-beating, bragging, one-upsmanship and self-proclaimed superiority. Not necessarily involving athletics.

UCLA gets a huge verbal commit

UCLA received a verbal commitment from former National High School Player of the Year, QB Ben Olson.

Olson went to BYU out of high school, redshirted for a year and then went on his Morman mission. So, he became a recruitable player again.

UCLA finally has an elite QB to go with their surrounding talent. This is so huge for the program. A QB the level of Olson would probably have meant at least two to three more wins this past season, conservatively.
(Wash St., ASU, usc)

UCLA is on the rise again!

Can you guarentee that he will sign with them!!!! Nope, so lets see and how will he do in college if he does decide to play for UCLA... It would be good to see them rise again, better for the PAC-10

Perhaps he has the divine spirit of Joseph Smith on his side now.

First off, Mike: you don't follow college recruiting. Yes, the actual signing day is not until Feb 2; yes, it is not "official" until he has signed. However, every school honors a verbal commitment. They may keep in touch with them and recruit, but not near as aggressive as they would before a verbal. It is an unwritten honor code that virtually all HC's adhere to.

Second, focal: very true. Everyone is sure that he will be rusty. However, he can join the school in Jan (early for '05 signees) and begin practice in the Spring with the current team. The other '05 signees cannot begin practicing until the fall. So, he has a head up. Also, as of now, he is slated to be the #2 behind the current QB, Drew Olson, for the first year. So, again, he has ample time to get his skill honed. He wasn't named the best in his class nationally for nothing. Steve Spurrier, the DAY HE WAS HIRED, called Ben Olson to get him to come to South Carolina. He also had offers from Miami, Michigan, Cal, ASU. So, plenty of people that know thought he was still pretty good.

Third, jtg33: I have no idea who Joseph Smith is. LOL

LOL

He was the guy who founded Mormanism via visions of Native Americans saying that Christ was actually born on the North American continent and later wound up in the Middle East (I never understood how). He then supposedly went out into the woods and dug up some ancient gold tablets, along with a translator stone. This allowed him to translate the tablets, which turned out to be a different version of the New Testament. Only he could look at the stones, however, because if somebody else saw them they would stop working. So different translations of the same basic story were made to form the Book of Mormon.

At least that's what I gathered form watching South Park.

Learning about religion watching South Park.....that is freakin' hilarious!!!

I was starting to buy in to the story until I read where only Smith could read the tablets....then the South Park thing. ROTFLMAO!!!

How much of that is actually, true, though?

It actually is the true story for the most part. And I DID actually learn it by watching South Park.

Rock is an unknown quantity at this point
KP, most college recruits try to finsh up their high school degrees early so they can enroll and workout with the team early, helps with their fall class load too, been common practice now for about 3-4 years........

Rock, if the school they are attending has the type of quarter system or semester system, they can do it. UCLA does and that was a factor in his decision, although not the main one.
