The hockey game in Canada has become a big thing recently...you wouldn't believe HOW much. A few days ago, the murder trial of a 5 year old girl in Toronto was CANCELLED because of "the game". You can make or lose friends based on what you think of the Leafs. It seems that, up here, we place so much importance on the Leafs, we forget about more important things.
For example, I was at the Pita Pit last weekend, it was nearing the airing of the second Trailer Park Boys, so I grabbed a quick double chicken caesar. The owner, a very jolly Greek dude, was doing the orders all by himself, some idiot in the back was sweeping (I didn't complain), and when it came to my order, he said "all my staff took the day off to watch the hockey game".
Well, that figures. Justice also seems to stop because of the game, in fact, we should elect Cujo as Mayor of Toronto! I just don't see how the Leafs can wield such a power over people. Sometimes I miss important crap on TV when I'm working, but I just accept it that I'm working, and I should deal with it.
You see in movies like "Armageddon", how people listen to the radio at work, and service comes to a halt, to see if the world has ended yet. But more sports-related, you see people in movies listening to radios, or watching tv, when they SHOULD be doing their FUCKING JOB. Because of the time it took to get to my pita, I missed the beginning of the episode, because of those fuckers who took the time to cancel out on work because of some insignificant hockey game.
Don't mind me, I respect sports fans, but it seems that the more you get into it, the more it takes over you. I can't say to my customers who brag about the Leafs: "I really hope they lose in the future.", because it is poor customer service, and RUDE. I've lost "friends" because I hated the Leafs with an undying passion. Like, it's a pretty unique concept, making a team with white and blue the "Leafs". It's a cult up here, unfortunately.
You see also in tv shows and movies (in this case, reflective of real life) about guys who don't please their wife in bed, and would rather watch "the game". Not being a "the game" enthusiast myself, I find it difficult to show empathy for them, but I think that's valid. Sports are an addiction, and this addiction shouldn't be joked about. It should be treated with drugs, therapy, and even rehab in jail if one's behaviour gets WAY out of hand.
