A new Sports Illustrated article came out yesterday, once again turning to the steroid scandal in baseball. SI writer, Richard (Dick) Hoffer, has jumped on the steroid bandwagon. Why now are all these members of the media coming out and making these statements, “Bonds needs to retire before he shams the game.” Baseball has been corrupt for years. Do we really know how many players in major league baseball have or are currently using steroids? Did the troubles just start now? HELL NO, the fact of the matter is every columnist, sports anchor, or sports magazine wants to get their 10¢ in.
In the back of every baseball fans mind, people knew the players were taking steroids, but has this really affected their love of the game. Baseball attendance was an all time high last season with over 73 million fans packing the 30 stadiums across United States. It’s a proven fact that baseball fans, I for one, love to see the long ball hit. In a close game or a towering shot, there’s an adrenaline rush which races through our bodies.
Did Richard Hoffer ask for Jason Giambi to retire, No! He is only attacking Barry Bonds because of how close Bonds is to sports most elite record. This past week we have seen the release of Jose Canseco’s book and Kimberly Bell’s coming out on Geraldo Rivera show, stating that Barry Bonds told her everything, spilled his guts, for the lord of me, SHUT UP. Would we even be discussing this if the Grand Jury testimony had not been leaked, a plain and simple answer, No. How come all these people are now making these statements, writing these articles, why now. Where were they when Sosa and Maguire were going to head to head and Bonds hit 73, why now, someone tell me.
Maybe I am just pro Bonds, well dammit I am and this will never cease. Sure I do not like the fact that he is juiced, something that I will admit to. I am for sure as hell not going to criticize Bonds or any other player for what they do, well at least not now, not because of all these new revelations. I did not make any such argument back in the late 90’s and this is one bandwagon that this guy will not jump on, even if I was not a Giants fan or pro-Bonds. The fact is everyone turned their heads then; now since it is major news, we all need to jump on and ride this puppy into the sunset, screw that!
