McGwire Deserves Cooperstown - Cooperstown Deserves McGwire - January 10th, 2007
Here's news: Mark McGwire was not voted into the baseball hall of fame. Everyone knows that players are voted in by the Baseball Writers Association of America. I am sure everyone has watched ESPN or some local coverage about how McGwire was shunned for his possible, alleged steroid use.

Steve Wilstein, the AP sports reporter, who found the bottle of Androstenedione in McGwire's locker, which put at least a small damper on his 1998 home run chase. This was really the start of the steroid era; this is what really kicked off all the probes. Moving forward, even to this day, every reporter in sports is looking for the next "big" story. Androstenedione was not illegal at the time. Any Joe could buy it at GMC. So what if he took this, so was everyone else that worked out in a gym or played in sports. Sure after the story broke and tons of other alleged steroid stories started piling in the door baseball banned the substance, but that was a couple of years down the road.

Has Mark McGwire ever been arrested for taking or distributing illegal steroids or performance enhancing drugs?
No

Has Mark McGwire ever had a positive test come back from a urinalysis or blood test for steroids or performance enhancing drugs?
No
Did Mark McGwire take a substance banned by Major League Baseball (at the time)?
No

McGwire's reputation was further damaged when he failed to credibly answer questions during congressional hearings about his possible steroid use. He stated that he did not want to answer those questions and right away he is guilty in the public's eye. He was not convicted of anything legally. Congressional hearings are not courts of law. I am sure that everyone is going to jump on me for stating that he kept his mouth shut and by doing so makes him guilty, no questions asked, right? WRONG. I do not care what sort of bashings I receive, I do not care what I am labeled for making these statements, and this is something that I cannot have my mind changed on. It is his right, as an American, to keep his life to himself. If he wants to make something public then that is totally up to him, not me, not you, not anyone.

Mark McGwire has done nothing wrong, he played baseball that is all. He brought smiles to the fans of St. Louis during his time there. People came to see him play the game. He totally deserves to be in the baseball hall of fame, he did nothing to baseball. Pete Rose did something that was illegal in baseball and he has suffered for it, but not McGwire.

Mark McGwire does not deserve this, if he is shunned for what he did not do then shame on the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Mark, you will always be a Hall of Fame player in my mind
