The New York Yankees - main reason baseball needs a salary cap - July 27th, 2006
The New York Yankees are probably the most known sports franchise in the world. Traveling to the four corners of this world it is likely that one would see someone wearing a NY Yankees hat. What does that tell you about the team? Is it because they have won the most World Series Championships or is it because of the marketing skills of owner George Steinbrenner, a legend in his own mind.

Everyone knows that the Yankees are one of the oldest baseball teams in existence. From the times of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrirg to Reggie Jackson, they are the champions of the 20th century by far. They did it with some 20 + series championships and many star players.

So what makes me want to "bad mouth" the most storied team in all of sports, well that's a joke. If anyone who, reading this third grade level article, knows about baseball at a general level, knows that Steinbrenner has been able to build a team by paying outlandish salaries to the starting players. Derrick Jeter makes over $ 20 million a season, for Christ sake, he is not even the highest paid player on the team.

I believe that the Yankees payroll is over the $ 200 million mark, which is more than the combined team salaries of Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Oakland A's, and Pittsburgh Pirates. That is a joke, well it may make you chuckle a little. The funny thing is that they cannot even win a championship with all of these millionaires.

Baseball desperately needs to put some sort salary cap in place instead of highering some old retired senator (George Mitchell) to perform an investigation into baseball steroid use, woops I mean the Barry Bonds witch hunt! Every other major American sport has some sort of cap in place, all of them working perfectly. Why can't baseball? Well for one, the player's union wont allow it. If I were the commissioner, I'd banish the players union after getting approval from all the owners. Sure that is something which will never happen, but Jesus Christ, players are just employees and should be happy with what they make not bitch and cry about making more and more every year.

God for bid any of you reading this plan on starting a family any time soon.
The year is 2020, you live in Brooklyn with 2 boys ages 9 and 7, respectively. You are also a diehard Yankees fan. Control of the Yankees has been handed over to the third stepson of George Steinbrenner's forth wife. It is the last year of Yankee stadium, construction on a new stadium, appropriately named Steinbrenner Field, will be complete by the start of next season. It is the last game of the season against the Boston Red Sox and you want so badly to take your kids, but there's a catch. Tickets for the game, in the upper deck in right or left field cost a mere $ 150.00 each. You cannot fathom paying $ 600.00 to take you wife and kids to the game, you're income from the JSNY (Janitorial Services of New York) pays you only $ 25000.00 a month. God forbid you go into the game and your kids become hungry, you can just forget that. At last glance, hotdogs were a mere $ 30.00 each and Soda (75% ice) was at $ 15.00 for a small.

The New York Yankees, no correct that, George Steinbrenner is the reason that baseball desperately needs to put some sort of salary cap into place. Screw parity like the salary cap has done to the National Football League, I just want to be able to take my grand kids to baseball games!
