Rant Californian - Part 2 - September 23rd, 2005
Friday, September 16

We slithered out of our first resting place feeling grimier than a week of camping out on the beach. After the thirty minute drive, including a stop at an ever-present and completely necessary Starbucks, we lugged our bags up to the front desk, eager to shower and clean up, only to find out that check-in wasn’t until 3 pm. 3 pm! There it was, 8:30 in the morning, and we were supposed to wait another six and a half hours! We think the receptionist saw the look of despair on our faces, and probably smelled our odoriferous emanations, and told us we could check in at about 12 as long as the room was clean, and he promised it would be. With that good news, we took off for Hollywood, about 40 minutes away.

Our first stop was to check out the beautiful campus of UCLA. And beautiful it is! We first went to the UCLA store where they sell Bruin merchandise. KP could have spent $3,000 on hats, shirts, jerseys, shorts, etc. A hat, windbreaker and football media guide later we crossed the walkway to the Morgan Athletic Center, which houses the museum and history of UCLA sports, including every NCAA championship trophy UCLA has ever won. Remember, UCLA leads the country in total championships, so that was a big room. The Center had authentic memorabilia worn by Lew Alcindor, Jackie Robinson, Bill Walton, Troy Aikman to name just a few of the outstanding athletes the Bruin program has produced over the years.

We left the campus and took a quick drive down Rodeo Drive. Not a big deal, really. We just needed to kill some time and Mike wanted to see if he could run in to Angelina Jolie, by chance. Bummer that it didn’t happen. We drove to Sunset Boulevard and then to Hollywood to see what we could see, locate the touristy hot spots, say we were there and then head back for our early check-in. After showering, relaxing and eating we took off again to have a couple drinks on Sunset Boulevard. The nightlife is exciting and the “scenery” is outstanding. But, knowing we needed to get up early for a long day of live football action, we didn’t stay out too long.

Part three through five to follow....
