The Rant Poll - October 20th, 2005
SportsRant’s Weekly Top 25

Weekends like this past one is why I watch college football. There were so many last chance comeback wins it was amazing. And, didn’t I tell you Michigan wouldn’t lose again in the Big House? Notre Dame just misses out on the biggest shocker of the year, but what an outstanding game that was!

So, two more teams fail to keep their unblemished record, Florida State, in an upset, and Penn State. What team or teams will fall this week? Don’t worry…read on and I’ll let you know.

While there may not be the drama and huge comebacks this week, keep your eye on these games this week: Texas Tech at Texas; Virginia Tech at Maryland; Tennessee at Alabama; Auburn at LSU. Look for at least one upset out of that group.

On to the poll:

1. USC 6-0 Wow. Was it a timeout or wasn’t it? Did Reggie Bush help Matt Leinart across the end zone? Who cares…it was a great college football, high grass or no high grass.

2. Texas 6-0 Should I? Will I? Is it possible? Waiting….waiting….hold….no! I can’t do it. Tech won’t beat the Longhorns this week. Vince Young is on a Heisman roll. Texas will have to score 40 to win, but win they will.

3. Virginia Tech 6-0 How glad are they to have been off last week? Even with two weeks to prepare, Maryland won’t be able to stay with the Hokies.

4. Georgia 6-0 Another week, another win for the Bulldogs.

5. Alabama 6-0 Crush Florida and then squeak by Mississippi. Hmmm, maybe a bit overconfident? Or, maybe looking ahead to Tennessee? Phil Fulmer and the Vols had two weeks to prepare for this game. This is the Rant’s upset special.

6. UCLA 6-0 Exorcised one demon by winning in Pullman for the first time in twelve years. Can exorcise another by winning this week to go 7-0. Last time the Bruins started with six wins they lost the next four.

7. Texas Tech 6-0 If only this game against Texas was scheduled for Lubbock…here ends the Red Raiders unbeaten streak.

8. Miami 5-1 Is Devin Hester special or what? The Georgia Tech game will be less like a scrimmage and more like a D-1A college football game for the Hurricanes. But don’t expect it to be close.

9. LSU 4-1 Last week I said the Florida game would be telling. It was. The Tigers are good. Now Auburn comes calling, but this is a night game in Baton Rouge. Fearless prediction coming: Tigers will win the game. Ha!

10. Florida State 5-1 I’m betting that Bobby Bowdon will not schedule Virginia on the road any time soon. Okay, so it’s not up to him. But, another upset at the hands of the Cavaliers? All I can say is, “Poor Duke.”

11. Boston College 6-1 Your QB not doing too well? Down by a bunch of points? Just put in your backup and let him score 14 to win. Sounds like a good recipe….if you’re playing Wake Forest.

12. Penn State 6-1 They had the win. One more second. Maybe this will be a learning point for the Nittany Lions that you have to finish EVERY PLAY!

13. Oregon 6-1 Are the Ducks starting to find a defense? 20,17,21 the last there games. At Arizona this week has the potential to be a stumbling block.

14. Auburn 5-1 Tigers fans bracing for another loss. This team is good, but it’s not LSU good.

15. Wisconsin 6-1 Only Lady Luck could get the Badgers to win that last game. Sometimes you have to be lucky as well as good to win.

16. West Virginia 6-1 Another great, wacky game that makes college football the best around. With focus, the Mountaineers shouldn’t lose another game this year.

17. Texas Christian 6-1 Every game the Horned Frogs win makes the SMU loss bigger and bigger.

18. Nebraska 5-1 Yes, Baylor was a huge game. The offense needs to know they can score when they need to against an inferior opponent. They aren’t yet a dangerous offensive team, but the potential is certainly there.

19. Notre Dame 4-2 It is a shame the Irish had to lose this game. Giving up a first down on 4th and nine with the game on the line has got to be tough. Now they have to win all their games just to qualify for the BCS.

20. Ohio State 4-2 Indiana will be no problem for the Buckeyes.

21. Florida 5-2 Gators need to get more consistent on offense, and getting QB Chris Leak healthy is a major step towards that. A week off before going to Georgia is just what the doctor ordered.

22. Tennessee 3-2 How is it that the Vols have only played five games? Two off weeks in the first seven weeks of the season is the reason.

23. Virginia 4-2 Huge win for the Cavaliers. Now the question is whether or not they can sustain the momentum. A loss to an inferior team pretty much makes the FSU win a wash.

24. California 5-2 Two losses in a row and still ranked in the Rant Poll? It was tough, but the Bears are still talented enough to beat anyone else that would be ranked in this spot.

25. Northwestern 4-2 Wildcats seem to be hitting a nice stride, and just in time with the meat of their schedule continuing this week against Michigan State. Northwestern will win this game in Lansing.

Dropped out: Baylor, Colorado, Louisville, Minnesota, Michigan State

Others considered: Baylor, Colorado, Louisville, Minnesota, Michigan State, Fresno St., Georgia Tech, Iowa, Oregon State,
