Guaranteeing a win in sports has become an annoying trend among pretentious athletes and we need to put an end to it. Although it may seem like a bold move to predict a win, the act itself has become purely childish, especially when the guarantee fails.
Current and clueless athletes are cheapening the sports guarantee. There was a time when the guarantee actually meant something. When New York Jets Quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed a victory in Super Bowl III that was something special -- even sacred to some -- because it carried the NFL to great heights. But now, because of a few bad apples, the guarantee has become a lame motivational tactic for insecure athletes. So I have come up with a solution and I hope every league commissioner adopts my policy.
Rule 3a: “If a player makes a guarantee and is wrong, he should be fined $100,000 and/or suspended on the grounds of stupidity.”
As fans we need to force the leagues to take a stand on foolish behavior. After all, we allow the leagues to prosper, therefore we should have a say on how things are run.
