Validating True Sports Fans - November 13th, 2005
How do you truly know that you are a sports fan? Is there some sort of sports test that one can take to validate this? What made you a sports fan? Well let’s answer these questions, or at least try.

Most sports fans tend to stay specific to one sport. Just as Point Man thinks he is the walking NHL almanac, so do I on football, pro that is. Lots of people, including myself, try to act like they know what they are talking about, but usually fail to grasp every aspect. Sometimes I just sit back and glance through the NHL forum, trying to relate to current threads and posts. See I know that I never follow the NHL, why you ask, because I was never introduced to that when I was a kid, that my friend is the time when you, as a sports fan, really become a true sports fan.

Molding our children is our jobs as fathers. I live in Dallas, but as you all know bleed Red & Gold and I am here to say that my two boys will never be Dallas Cowboy fans, at least not in my lifetime. I know that every male who follows their favorite team was brainwashed by someone close to them during adolescence. Even daddy’s little girl is treated the same way; I mean why in hell would anyone even think different. Later in life when kids are in puberty, they are sometimes forced by schoolmates to back different teams. I fear this will happen to my kids while they attend class in northern Texas, which is why Texas has a concealed gun law, for parents like me.

So how do we validate being a sports fan? There is only one answer people! Create a national testing system for sports fans validation. To build such a testing system would then allow sports fans to actually be certified in the sport of their choice. These tests would consist of general questions, team history, rules, and mostly statistics. Scoring levels or grades would reflect the knowledge of the individual. So let’s say I take the San Francisco Giants test and pass it with a 90 or higher, well I would be considered a master or “true giants fan”. Anyone could take team level tests, but to take the national test for baseball (in this case), a tester would have to pass at least 1/3 of the cities in that particular sport. So there are 31 teams in baseball, I would have to take and pass 10 out of those 31 and score a certain level.

This would be the ultimate way to prove to people that you are a true fan or at least one that knew what they were talking about. The testing could grow to a world level; sports such as soccer or even ping pong could be included.

If you want to be known as a master, like Point Man does, of sports or a sport in general, then pass the test. That is all!
